Boundaries and parent counties

Formed from: Clinch County, Irwin County, Telfair County, Ware County

Check the parent counties for earlier records: Clinch County, Irwin County, Telfair County, Ware County

Later formed partly from Coffee County: Atkinson County, Bacon County, Ben Hill County, Jeff Davis County

Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1854, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.

Research tip

Georgia gave away much of its land by lottery between 1805 and 1833, so if your ancestor was in Georgia then, look for their name in the land lottery lists as well as the county's deed books. Tax digests, which survive for many counties from the 1790s on, place a person in a county year by year.
