Records that survive

These are the Lanier County record books the Georgia Archives has scanned and put online free in its Virtual Vault, grouped into series with the earliest and latest years. They're a selection: the archives' full index (linked below) lists every county record it has on microfilm.

The Georgia Archives hasn't put any Lanier County record books online yet. Its index of the county's microfilm, linked below, shows what it holds; for newer counties, many records may be only at the county courthouse.

Formed from: Berrien County, Clinch County, Lowndes County

Check the parent counties for earlier records: Berrien County, Clinch County, Lowndes County

Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1920, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.

Research tip

Georgia gave away much of its land by lottery between 1805 and 1833, so if your ancestor was in Georgia then, look for their name in the land lottery lists as well as the county's deed books. Tax digests, which survive for many counties from the 1790s on, place a person in a county year by year.
