Repository access note: Selected sources are linked on individual entries. NYSL newspaper dates summarize service-copy microfilm holdings, not a continuous run or the newspaper’s entire publication life; follow the link for exact issues and gaps. Court surveys describe county holdings and may require advance arrangements. Historical NYG&B microfilm listings refer to a collection transferred to NYPL; confirm current availability there. These sources do not promise online images or complete county coverage.

Boundaries and parent counties
Formed from: Allegany County, Genesee County
Check the parent counties for earlier records: Allegany County, Genesee County
Later formed partly from Niagara County: Erie County
Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1808, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.
Research tip
New York took state censuses in years ending in 5 from 1825 to 1875, and in 1892, 1905, 1915 and 1925. Many survive at the county clerk's office and fill gaps between federal censuses.
