Boundaries and parent counties
Formed from: Clearfield County, Jefferson County, McKean County
Check the parent counties for earlier records: Clearfield County, Jefferson County, McKean County
Later formed partly from Elk County: Cameron County
Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1843, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.
Research tip
Pennsylvania counties didn't issue marriage licenses until the fall of 1885, so earlier marriages are mostly in church records. Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian and Quaker registers are often the best source.
