Boundaries and parent counties

Formed from: Westmoreland County

Check the parent county for earlier records: Westmoreland County

Later formed partly from Washington County: Allegheny County, Beaver County, Greene County

Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1781, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.

Research tip

Pennsylvania counties didn't issue marriage licenses until the fall of 1885, so earlier marriages are mostly in church records. Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian and Quaker registers are often the best source.
