Repository access note: The Recorder’s Archives describes these City of St. Louis records and search/copy services; it is distinct from St. Louis County government. Early records predate the 1876 city–county separation. Birth and death spans are approximate. Copies and some staff searches have fees; the guide links request forms and land/marriage searches. Directory selections are library microfilm or microfiche holdings and do not imply online images.

Records stay with the county that created them. Before 1876, many of this city's records may have been kept by the county it separated from, so search there too. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.

Research tip

Missouri's probate files often hold far more than a will: inventories, sale bills listing the buyers (often relatives and neighbors) and the receipts of heirs. Check the circuit court too, where heirs went to divide land.
