Boundaries and parent counties
Formed from: Cumberland County
Check the parent county for earlier records: Cumberland County
Later formed partly from Bedford County: Blair County, Fulton County, Huntingdon County, Northumberland County, Somerset County, Westmoreland County
Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1771, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.
Research tip
Pennsylvania counties didn't issue marriage licenses until the fall of 1885, so earlier marriages are mostly in church records. Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian and Quaker registers are often the best source.
