Boundaries and parent counties
Formed from: Bedford County, Berks County, Cumberland County, Lancaster County, Northampton County
Check the parent counties for earlier records: Bedford County, Berks County, Cumberland County, Lancaster County, Northampton County
Later formed partly from Northumberland County: Allegheny County, Centre County, Columbia County, Luzerne County, Lycoming County, Mifflin County, Union County
Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1772, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.
Research tip
Pennsylvania counties didn't issue marriage licenses until the fall of 1885, so earlier marriages are mostly in church records. Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian and Quaker registers are often the best source.
