Boundaries and parent counties
Formed from: Northumberland County
Check the parent county for earlier records: Northumberland County
Later formed partly from Luzerne County: Bradford County, Lackawanna County, Susquehanna County, Wyoming County
Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1786, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.
Research tip
Pennsylvania counties didn't issue marriage licenses until the fall of 1885, so earlier marriages are mostly in church records. Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian and Quaker registers are often the best source.
