Boundaries and parent counties
Formed from: Cumberland County, Lancaster County, Philadelphia County
Check the parent counties for earlier records: Cumberland County, Lancaster County, Philadelphia County
Later formed partly from Berks County: Northumberland County, Schuylkill County
Records stay with the county that created them. If your ancestor lived here before 1752, search the parent county. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shows each boundary change.
Research tip
Pennsylvania counties didn't issue marriage licenses until the fall of 1885, so earlier marriages are mostly in church records. Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian and Quaker registers are often the best source.
